About Friends of South Ribble Parks
Welcome to the Friends of South Ribble Parks and Open Spaces. We are in fact several Friends groups who have come together to showcase the work that is being done by volunteers in the parks and open spaces around South Ribble.
Over the last few years, we have all seen how important our green spaces are, not only for the wellbeing of residents but also for wildlife and the planet.
During the pandemic many people re-discovered the joys of gardening and being outdoors but for those that don’t have a garden our parks and green spaces were a lifeline. As if the pandemic wasn’t enough, we have the climate emergency, energy, and cost of living crisis.
South Ribble Parks
A walk in the park is far more interesting when there is a rich biodiversity, spotting different plants, birds, insects, mammals and visit the pond/ dipping platform to see the range of amphibians that we have in our parks.

Green Flag Awards
Four of our parks have been awarded the Green Flag. Worden Park in Leyland, Hurst Grange Park in Penwortham, Longton Brickcroft Nature Reserve and Withy Grove Park in Bamber Bridge. The Green Flag award recognises well managed Parks across the country and the world. Worden Park is the only park outside of the London area that has won a flag every year since the awards scheme started in 1997.
Volunteer at Your Local Park
Our Friends Groups do amazing work helping us look after South Ribble’s parks and open spaces. Working alongside officers from South Ribble Borough Council, you will assist with the ongoing maintenance of our parks to improve the area for the public and wildlife. Many of our groups are constituted and from time to time apply for external funding for specific projects in partnership with South Ribble Council.
South Ribble Parks Latest News
By highlighting the work being done by the various Friends groups we hope to attract more volunteers. An active Friends group can put their own stamp on a park by having ideas, applying for grants, and seeing a project through start to finish.
In the Blog section of the website, we show a month-by-month account of the work being carried out in the various parks by the Friends, but we will also be visiting the other green spaces around South Ribble. We hope to create dialogue between the various Friends groups and maybe with the council, share ideas as to how the parks can adapt to climate change and how to help maintain the flora and fauna of the parks.
